These days a brand has to choose its spokesperson wisely. Oscar Pistorius, who is considered a national hero in South Africa, is free on bond today. Pistorius is being accused of premeditated murder for the shooting death of his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.

Pistorius is the amputee the world has come to know as the “bladerunner,” and he is considerd a national hero in South Africa. He competes in races wearing carbon fiber blades in place of more traditional prosthetic limbs. He competed in the London Olympics last year, and is a champion in the Paralympic Games.

Groupe Clarins recently pulled Thierry Mugler ads for the fragrance AMen, which featured Pistorius, out of respect for all those involved in the tragedy.

Mugler is the third brand to distance itself from the athlete-turned-celebrity. Oakley suspended its contract as well, while Nike’s 2011 ad campaign featuring Pistorius had this copy – “I Am the Bullet in the Chamber.”
